The RotoFeed: Top 400 for 2014 Fantasy Baseball

Wait, where was I?  Okay, you know that I like Avisail Garcia more than Leonys Martin in the top 60 outfielders for 2014 fantasy baseball. You know I like Alcides Escobar more than Asdrubal Cabrera as seen at the top 20 shortstops for 2014 fantasy baseball, but you don’t know how I feel about where these guys fall in the bigger picture.  Is Alcides above Avisail?  So to show you where I think players fall in relation to each other in 2014 fantasy baseball drafts, I’m putting together a top 400 for 2014 fantasy baseball.  This still needs to be taken with a grain of salt.  If you have a shortstop already and Alcides is still on the board at pick 200, you don’t draft him if you see Leonys Martin and you need an outfielder, even though Leonys is below Alcides on this list.  So I might take someone at 200 over someone at 180?  Yes, every draft is different.  With the top 10, there’s almost no latitude.  With the top 100, there’s a decent amount of latitude.  With a top 400, there’s lots of latitude.  You taking someone at 185 is more or less the same as someone else taking someone at 235.  So if you see someone who’s ranked at 250th, but want them at 200, then do what you do.  Because of the length of the top 400, there’s no pithy comments with each name, but you kinda do need to know what I’m thinking for each name, so I advise you go over each position in the 2014 fantasy baseball rankings. The top 100 and top 400 is what I would have at my drafts, along with the top 20 rankings posts.  If I were drafting online, I’d also use the Fantasy Baseball War Room (which is hopefully ready on Tuesday; this is out of my control, someone else needs to fill out the Excel spreadsheet).

The RotoFeed :: Top 5 Second Basemen 25-Years Old or Younger

While he doesn’t bring speed to the table, the biggest question is if he can improve on his .249 average from 2013.  He was at .272 in the first half, though can he maintain a 26.9% line drive rate?  It fell to 18.0% in the second half, which is probably low in and of itself.  He should be able to post a 21-22% mark (22.5% overall), so he definitely should maintain a better BABIP (.287 in ’13).

The greater question may be his strikeouts, which rose from 21.7% in the first half to 25.2% in the second.  He was at 17.3% from 2011-2013 in the minors, so the first half number is probably closer to the truth.  While it’s hardly elite, you couple the improved strikeouts with the BABIP and he should be able to hit .270.

Fantasy Bust: DickersonIt appears that Corey Dickerson and Drew Stubbs will be in a platoon to start the season, as of right now at least. If this is so, then I will be waiting on Dickerson in all my drafts.  Of the two I like Stubbs better, but I will get to that in a little while.Dickerson’s scouting reports have never been all that exciting to read.  He doesn’t offer much speed or power and is not likely to be more that a utility outfielder with a weak arm.

Prospect Watch: Jonathan GrayGray has the stuff that people go nuts over, a fastball that is consistently in the mid-90′s and can touch 101. He also has a slider that has Keith Law’s knees buckling in his sleep. With as weak as the Rockies pitching is, I would expect Jonathan Gray to be up at some point this year, even though he may start in AA.  However most think that Eddie Butler will be up first, even though he too will start in AA as of now. Either way, both of these kids are worth a look.

Fantasy Sleeper: Drew StubbsStubbs is like a power man’s Dexter Fowler.  He has shown some dynamic power and speed production throughout his career and perhaps Coors field will agree with him and he can earn himself an everyday spot in the Rockies lineup. I might be willing to take a chance on Drew Stubbs in the last round of a draft, but most likely will just keep an eye on him as a free agent.

Final ThoughtsAll in all I think the Rockies are a good source of fantasy options.  Unfortunately most of those options come with some question marks.  we have everything here, small sample size, platoons, and injury risks.  The thing is that if these guys are falling in drafts because of question marks, it makes them all the more attractive as fantasy options.  So be on the ready to scoop these guys up.Further ReadingWho’d You Rather: Troy Tulowitzki or Hanley Ramirez?Fantasy Baseball Catcher Profiles: Wilin Rosario
