That's right, Durant's big night on Sunday put even more distance between his top-notch All-Star scoring average and that of his next closest competitor, LeBron James.
KD pumped in 38 points in the West's 163-155 defeat in New Orleans. And while the focus here is on Durant's career scoring average in the NBA's annual February exhibition, it's worth noting the isolated significance of his big night.
If Durant maintains his current pace, he'll need another five All-Star games to overtake Kobe Bryant's record 280 total points assuming Kobe's done as an All-Star. So, mark your calendars for Feb. 16, 2019.
Of course, James is already up to 248 points, good enough for the No. 4 spot overall. If he maintains his average of 24.8 points per game, we may never see Durant reach the top of the total points list.
Then again, Durant seems pretty committed to getting shots up in the All-Star game.
So, anything's possible.
After the game, KD was a bit disappointed in the result.
Per The Associated Press (via ESPN) he said: "Both teams played extremely well, we just lost."
The West came up short, but not for any lack of effort from Durant. He's been a man on a mission all season, and it now appears he's gunning for a few all-time accomplishments.
It'll be a while before KD misses out on an All-Star game. Expect him to continue adding to an already ridiculous scoring average for years to come.
