Union got an early third-period goal from Max Novak and it held up as the game winner, 4-3 over Brown. The win helped the Dutchmen stay one point ahead of Quinnipiac for first place in the ECAC. Novak also had two goals against Brown in last year's ECAC championship game.
"He's always been a kid since freshman year, the bigger the game, the better he is," Union's acting coach Joe Dumais said.
Brown was playing with five defensemen and one forward converted to defense, thanks to injuries. Inexperience contributed to the winning goal, as Novak came in and fired a quick shot.
"They made a play," Brown coach Brendan Whittet said. "Their defensemen have the ability to carry it up the ice. That was just a pressure play that we didn't execute correctly — we were backing in and we wanted to play a little more aggressive."
Dumais is filling in for Rick Bennett, who serves the last of a four-game suspension Saturday.
"At times I thought we played very well, and times we struggled, and times as well it was up and down and more to our liking," Dumais said. "But the guys battled hard, they competed, they faced adversity again and stuck with it. That speaks volumes to the leaders in that locker room."
